Graham Hobart has finally released the book that everyone has been asking for!
Over the years, Graham Hobart has been asked to tell his story in various television, radio, and live-event interviews, so it made perfect sense to transcribe various portions from some of these events and compile them into a book.
Each question attempts to uncover the motivation and philosophy behind the unconventional look of Hobart’s work. The answers are candid but profound while also tossing in a few wildly entertaining stories to keep things light.
There is a natural progression to the book’s structure, but each chapter stands alone, so feel free to come and go and dip in and out as you fancy. There are no rules, and at the end of it, you will feel like you got to know Graham Hobart in a way that may not be so apparent at first.
With all of the one hundred and twenty-eight images carefully detailed in a reference catalog at the end of the book, together with geographic reference maps, you will feel more informed than ever. Take a walk on the wild side and enjoy beautiful imagery, historical context, and stories of adventure as Graham Hobart opens his heart to you, the audience, in this “interview” for the reader.
(This book comes with a sturdy dust jacket, a foil embossed slip cover and a red ribbon marker.)
I first met Graham Hobart during one of our exhibitions in the historic galleries of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. He had won an award in our prestigious Nature’s Best Photography competition with the image of a leopard coming down a tree. We found an instant rapport and have stayed in touch ever since.
What Graham has done with his modified cameras is nothing short of remarkable. In my world, where we seek out the very best of the best, there will always be the colorful single-image wonders that receive awards; however, Graham’s dramatic black and white perspective and skillful attention to texture and composition detail puts his work into a class all on its own.
There is a maturity and sensitivity together with consistency in both style and messaging that has earned him the reputation of one of the great nature photographers of his generation.
This book is light reading but will tug at your heartstrings and also make you laugh. His clarity of thought will allow you to see deep into the mind of a true artist through anecdotal stories, historical references and candid observations.
I thoroughly enjoyed every page and highly recommend you experience the magic for yourself.
